We have partnered with our friends at Raw Material for this year’s El dorado.

We needed a classic and tasty all-rounder that can be brewed as a single origin filter, but also stand up well as an espresso. As one of our most popular coffees, El Dorado needed to fit a specific profile to keep our loyal customers happy but also allow us to showcase just how delicious classic style Colombian coffees are.

We were loving our El Dorado from this Summer, but due to unrest and protests that took place in Colombia earlier this year, in response to a proposed tax reform (Reforma Tributaria) outlined by the country’s President, Ivan Duque, there were some inevitable complications of coffee shipments that producers, exporters and importers have worked extremely hard to navigate around.

The new crop of El Aguila will be with us in a couple of months, but for the time being we have sourced a similar coffee through the same coffee partners to see us through until the shipment lands. This latest iteration of El Dorado is from Cauca Especial, from The Department of Cauca, located in the Southwest of Colombia between the Pacific Region and the Andean region.

The Cauca coffee plantations are developed at altitudes from 1800m to 2100m, in soils mostly of volcanic soil, which provides special features to the coffee cup.

Cauca coffee has a tradition dating back to the nineteenth century, the quality of coffee in this region is due in large part to smallholder crops that allow farmers to collect and benefit coffee in a traditional way, obtaining coffee qualities recognized by international markets. The average farm size is 0.8 hectares.

Four coffee provinces can be distinguished in Cauca, each with different cultural, climate and social characteristics: the eastern region, northern region, southern region and the plateau region of Popayán.

About 65% of coffee production is developed in the plateau region, with particularly homogeneous land and climatic characteristics throughout the area, which is one of the fundamental conditions to keep the consistency of the cup of this Cauca Especial: uniformity and balance.

There are many reasons why we love working with Raw Material, besides their delicious coffees. 100% of their profits go back to producers and their communities and they work directly with producers to ensure they have a sustainable reason to invest in quality.

Here’s some info on how they are working with the producers in Colombia:

"In Colombia, we raise quality and shelf-life through low-cost interventions within existing structures. We do this by creating systems to ensure consistency of large lots at a community level. This in turn enables reliable, stable and improved household incomes for smallholder farmers through connection with roasters. Our secondary focus is to shift the power dynamic in the coffee sector; as specialty becomes a norm, there are new opportunities for women to gain higher-income and higher-powered roles. The third area of focus is environmental; Colombia has a high average output per hectare, but this comes at the costs associated with mono-cropping and high-input farming techniques." – Raw Material.
